It sounds like you're plugging stereo headphones into a mono jack, this will result in sound only going to one side. To resolve this, you need a stereo-to-mono adapter like this one:

This will split the signal to both ears.

IT could be the headphones. It might be different on the computer but headphones sometimes pick and choose which side of the headphones will word depending on how the headphones are positions.
It could also be the type of jack you use.
#1 The Mono Jack
#2 Stereo Jack
Another problem could be if your headphones are mono. One or the other may be.
Just go to a local store like Radio Shack, Micro Center, or Best Buy?
